Buj Studio
BUJ Studio is an experimental fashion brand specialising in unearthing new horizons at the intersection of fashion and architecture. The studio is directed and founded by Raquel Buj, a multidisciplinary artist, fashion designer, architect, and educator whose pieces have been exhibited across the world in Madrid, Shanghai, Rome and other cities. The studio is conceived as a laboratory experimenting in biomanufacturing, exploring a unique zoomorphic and post-human aesthetic.

HEAT RESPONSE
What if clothing was the next layer of our evolution?

Clothing, by its very definition, has always been thought of as something that lies between us and the world. A covering, a layer of protection from external elements—ranging from climatic conditions like cold or heat, to other factors like rough terrain or even physical dangers.

But what if we saw clothing not as a means of protection from, but a connection to? THE SECOND SKIN is a revolutionary garment that is in some ways the antithesis of one — designed to help our bodies become part of the greater natural ecosystem, rather than function apart from it.
“During my research, I discovered several surprising systems used by other species, such as cacti, to adapt to extreme heat. How their skin, with its hairs and trichomes can trap dewdrops and create shade around them to prevent water loss,” explains artist and designer, Raquel Buj. “The idea of clothing as a second skin… a porous piece where the barriers between the human and the non-human, between interior and exterior, disappear.”

Made entirely out of biomaterials—including plant waste, living and germinated natural materials—THE SECOND SKIN represents “a whole system of adapting to heat without isolating or enclosing oneself,” Buj adds. The result pushes us to think beyond the individuality of our bodies and minds, and to understand ourselves as part of an ecosystem.
